This scenario may seem unlikely, but it is not. Many unscrupulous dealers will intentionally hide the inclusions or chips, to deceive the buyer into thinking it is a higher clarity stone. On the other hand, a private-party seller may be well aware of them, and simply chooses not to tell the unwary buyer of the hidden surprise. Or perhaps the seller was originally informed that inclusions or chips were covered for protective and appearance purposes, but over the years, he or she simply forgot.
