The table is the most important single facet on the diamond. If too large, it decreases the size of the surrounding crown facets (the crown mains, stars and upper girdle facets) and as a result it reduces the area where much of the dispersion occurs. If it’s too small, the amount of light entering the stone is limited, resulting in less dispersion. Even with proper angles on the bottom of the diamond a very large table can produce a fish-eye, as shown in the following illustration:
