Pit (6.38)

Pit (6.38)

Pits are very small openings in the surface of a diamond. A pit must be viewed under good light and the facet must display a reflection in order to see the slight irregularity in the polished surface. Pits usually appear as tiny white to off-white spots, but pits can also be dark in color. Many times they can be removed with almost no weight loss, but it is just as likely that more pits will show up as the cutter polishes the surface. These are most likely due to very small included crystals breaking the surface.
