Nick (6.37)

Nick (6.37)

A nick is a very small chip that can be found anywhere on the diamond. The most usual location is the girdle or a pointed culet. Especially with a very thin or sharp girdle, daily wear and tear will eventually take its toll. On some stones nicks may also occur around the table, where a lot of abrupt contact can take place. To distinguish between a nick and an inclusion, focus on the surface of the diamond as light reflects across it. Nicks can generally be removed by the cutter with very minimal weight loss (.01 ct. or less).
