Estimating Diameter in a Bezel (12.01)
Very often a mounting can be a serious hindrance in determining the proportions of a diamond. A perfect example is the full bezel, sometimes called a gypsy mount setting, that makes it next to impossible to measure the diameter of the diamond in question. The
amount of metal the setter uses around the rim of the crown to set the diamond, will determine the number of hundredths or tenths of a millimeter that must be
added to the visible diameter of the diamond. On the other hand prongs with an open bottom is quite simply measured.
