Estimating Depth (12.02)
The depth of the diamond can be truly impossible to measure in certain styles of mountings without removing the stone. In particular, this would include a closed-back mounting where the pavilion is completely hidden. As previously discussed, the methods of determining the depth of a stone without taking actual measurements, especially come into play when these types of circumstances arise. The Table Reflection Method is very appropriate in helping to determine depth. (Subsection #5.17)

This closed back mounting looks suspicious, since it makes it impossible to measure the stone’s depth. Piggy-backing gives the illusion of a much larger diamond in the mounting. The side of the ring has been cut away to show the arrangement. A very flat diamond has been mounted in the upper and a very small diamond protruding through the bottom to falsify a much greater depth measurement in calculating weight.
