In addition to hidden inclusions, the larger the chip, the more likely the color will be affected. Like a thick gray girdle, a chip can potentially detract yellow. So the “H” color that you thought you purchased, turns out to be a “J” color after cutting is complete. For color, simply assume one to two grades lower than its appearance in the chipped state, and you should be safe.
