Bruting in Contrast to Polishing (16.14)
The term bruting is an accurate term, as it literally means forcing the diamond material away regardless of grain direction. In polishing a diamond, the material is easily removed when attacking the grain in a perpendicular direction and the well-charged scaife is traveling from the inside of the octahedral face to the outside. Often the cutter has to be very careful not to remove too much material when a facet is cutting (running) well. When a facet is running well, it gives off intense sparks and smoke, vibrating in a way that is unmistakable to the seasoned cutter.
