Blemishes and Inclusions (6.11)

Blemishes and Inclusions (6.11)

The two types of clarity classifications are blemishes and inclusions. Blemishes are found on the surface of the diamond and inclusions are found inside the diamond (as the name implies). Clarity grading is always performed under 10x magnification and good light. If a scope is available dark-field illumination is used with the lighting adjustment turned to a bright setting. With a scope or a loupe it is imperative that the stone is clean so not to confuse the natural oil of a person’s hand or small lint or dust particles that can easily be mistaken for inclusions. A cleaning cloth for loose diamonds is a must for proper examination. In addition a small brush and a can of compressed air is very helpful.
