A Faceted Girdle 5.34

A Faceted Girdle (5.34)

A faceted girdle requires more effort by the cutter since each facet must be polished one at a time. Faceted girdles add little, if any, additional brilliance or dispersion to a stone, but in the case of a fish-eye, the reflected girdle is a little easier to take. It is also regularly used to round up out-of-round diamonds. It is especially common in fancy shapes, so that the overall shape can be blended to a better balance. For this reason, it is customary to see very thick faceted girdles on elliptically-shaped fancy cuts.
