The more sophisticated shoplifters often work with a partner who creates a distraction, allowing one of the thieves to switch or pocket merchandise. Unfortunately, the salesperson must assume that any person walking into the store is a potential thief and therefore must be on his/her guard. The salesperson must keep a keen eye on all activity in the store, watching for distractions or coworkers who might take their eyes away from the merchandise they are showing. The manager or owner of the store must take responsibility in training the sales staff in security protocol. Don’t wait until the first incident has occurred before taking that action. A video or home study booklet on security for your employees would be an excellent way to teach them the necessary awareness that is so important in the trade.
