Once the cutter has found that the facet is cutting (commonly termed “running well”), the stone is then placed into the sharp cutting ring to polish it close to the final shape and depth of the finished facet. The cutter adds the diamond-powder-and-oil mixture regularly to make sure his scaife stays well charged. Once he is close to the finished shape and depth, the diamond is placed into the smoothing ring with a back and forth movement, to give the facet its final polish.
