The terminology of diamonds, as well as of diamond cutting, needs to be understood for good communication. The author has adopted the most accepted and modern terms for use in this course. Diamond cutting should include cleaving, sawing, faceting, polishing, and bruting (girdling). The term “fashioning” — a more archaic description of cutting — is still used, but not as often. Today it pertains more to the style of cutting, rather than as an overall term for cutting. Re-fashioning an old European cut into a modern brilliant cut would be an appropriate usage however.
